‘DWTS’ Julianne, Derek Hough behind Starz for ballroom dancing drama

Former “Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Julianne Hough and her brother Derek who is still on the show are teaming up with Starz to executive produce and serve as head choreographers for a dramatic series about the world of ballroom dance according to a Feb. 26 report on the Los Angeles Times.

The series entitled “Blackpool,” focuses on an annual ballroom competition held in Blackpool, England. The show intends to delve into the dark side of ballroom dancing.

Derek is looking forward to sharing the world gh grew up in with fans of ballroom. He wants to show that ballroom dance is much more than spray tans and sequins by lifting the veil and showing the “twisted, sexy, funny, dark and passionate side of the drama and politics in the world of ballroom dance.”

Julianne believes that Starz is the right network for this show. She says their passion, style and quality of their programming blend to make the perfect environment that will completely capture the world of dance she and Derek know and love.

Derek is the only three-time champion on “Dancing with the Stars” and recently filmed his first movie, "Cobu #D: New York Nights." He returns to the DWTS ballroom on March 18 as the partner of country singer Kellie Pickler for season 16.

Julianne recently opened her latest film, “Safe Haven” based on the Nicholas Sparks book and co-starring Josh Duhamel. She has also appeared in "Burlesque" and “Rock of Ages."
