'DWTS' fall 2014 rumors: Is a second-chance season on tap?

The popular reality dance competition "Dancing with the Stars," which pairs celebrity personalities with established professional dancers in a battle for ballroom dominance, is slated to return to ABC for a 19th season this fall. Although spoilers are scarce, an intriguing set of July 7 comments by former contestant Sherri Shepherd suggest that a second-chance season may be in store for viewers.

Shepherd, who finished a disappointing 10th place with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy during "DWTS" season 14, hinted at a potential return to the esteemed ballroom during two July 7 appearances. She first talked about the show while on "The View," and then again during an interview posted to Essence. When asked her her future plans, the bubbly Shepherd said she was excited to see what God has in store for her and was eager to "go back on 'Dancing with the Stars'" after the dissolution of her marriage and the end of her tenure as a co-host of "The View."

If a so-called second chance season does indeed wind up coming to fruition, it would represent just the second time the long-running franchise has deviated from its usual format. Only season 15, which aired during the fall of 2012 and was won by "The Bachelor" alum Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani, featured a star-studded line-up of popular celebrities who turned in successful appearances during previous seasons of the show.

Plenty of other former contestants whose original tenures on the show were sadly truncated could realistically return for a second go at the top prize. Potential top contenders could include musician Jewel and TV host Nancy O'Dell, who both withdrew from "DWTS" season eight due to injury before the show's premiere, and country music's Sara Evans, who made it to the halfway point of season three with pro partner Dovolani before an increasingly contentious divorce forced her to bow out of the competition prematurely.
