"Dancing with the Stars" 2014 resumed March 24 on ABC with a second week of performances by the season 18 cast. Although the evening was one of triumph for the three couples who ended the day knotted for the top spot on judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli's famed leader board, it was one of disappointment for the two hopefuls who fell victim to a surprise double elimination.
The first contestant sent packing from the hit reality show's new season was long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who according to "DWTS" co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, received the fewest votes following the March 17 season premiere. Bergeron delivered the bad news just moments before Nyad and pro partner Henry Byalikov were scheduled to perform their "Move Your Feet" cha cha cha, but the gracious pair quelled their disappointment and delivered the routine anyway after saying their good-byes to one another.
Later in the two-hour episode, after Olympians Meryl Davis and Charlie White and their partners Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Sharna Burgess and "Big Time Rush" star James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd each earned evening-high marks of 25 from the panelists, the final elimination result was delivered. With just pop star Cody Simpson and pro partner Witney Carson and former NHL star Sean Avery and Karina Smirnoff still in danger, Avery and Smirnoff were sent packing. Avery said he was pleased to have made a new friend in Smirnoff, and Smirnoff said she wished America had gotten a chance to see more of her oft-stoic partner's personality.
With the hotly anticipated partner switch vote under way via Twitter, the "DWTS" 2014 week two leader board is as follows:
- Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, 25
- Charlie White and Sharna Burgess, 25
- James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd, 25
- Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy, 24
- Amy Purdy and Derek Hough, 24
- Cody Simpson and Witney Carson, 22
- Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas, 21
- NeNe Leakes and Tony Dovolani, 21
- Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke, 21
- Billy Dee Williams and Emma Slater, 15
"Dancing with the Stars" 2014 continues March 31 on ABC with a third week of action from the ballroom.
