'DWTS' 2014 premiere: Best and worst dance debuts

"Dancing with the Stars" season 18 premiere aired live March 17, 2014 on ABC and if opening night was any indication this season may be one of the best yet. Twelve new celebrity contestants made their ballroom debut with a few earning surprisingly high scores from the "DWTS" judges but as always there were a few who well, just didn't measure up.

Topping tonight's "Dancing with the Stars" leader board were Olympic gold medalist, Charlie White and pro partner, Sharna Burgess. The two raked in an impressive 27 out of a possible 30 judges points for their Contemporary dance routine. A 27 is the highest score ever given during a premiere and has only been awarded one other time for a debut dance in "DWTS" history.

Coming in a close second were Candace Cameron-Bure, a.k.a "D.J. Tanner" from "Full House" and two time "DWTS" champ, Mark Ballas with 26 judges points for a mesmerizing Contemporary dance routine. I had high hopes for Candace and I wasn't disappointed. Carrie Ann Inaba was so amazed that she wanted to see it again.

All in all "Dancing with the Stars" season 18 celebrities brought in respectable premiere judges scores ranging from 18 - 27, (scroll down for full leader board), but not surprisingly "DWTS" oldest contestant, Billy Dee Williams, landed at the bottom with 15 judges points.

At 77, Billy Dee Williams is the oldest celebrity contestant competing on "Dancing with the Stars" this season and to be honest, a 77 year old just can't compete with someone say 17, especially in a dance competition. I really can't understand why "DWTS" adds the elderly to it's cast members. It just isn't fair.

Having said that, I want to applaud Williams for his "Dancing with the Stars" debut. I loved you then...and I love you now.

"DWTS" 2014 premiere night leader board:

Charlie White and Sharna Burgess: Contemporary - 27

Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas: Contemporary - 25

Danica McKellar and Valentin Chmerkovskiy: Fox Trot - 24

Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Cha Cha - 24

Amy Purdy and Derek Hough: Cha Cha - 24

Cody Simpson and Witney Carson: Cha Cha - 22

Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke: Fox Trot - 21

James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd: Fox Trot - 21

Sean Avery and Karina Smirnoff: Contemporary - 20

What did you think? Did "Dancing with the Stars" season 18 premiere live up to your expectations?
