"Dancing with the Stars" 2013 continued Oct. 21 on ABC with another round of spirited performances by the remaining mirror ball trophy hopefuls. Included in the mix were comedian Bill Engvall and Emma Slater, whose quirky show-starting tango drew plenty of cheesy comments from the panelists.
During a pre-taped rehearsal segment, the pair talked about the surprising Oct. 14 ouster of "The Voice" social media correspondent Christina Milian and Mark Ballas, who were shown the door less than two hours after earning the first perfect 10 of "DWTS" season 17. Although Emma noted that it would be difficult to dance a tango to Jimmy Buffet's "Cheeseburgers in Paradise," Bill was pleased with the song choice, calling it "more me" than other potential options. Emma joked that well-known burger joints would line up to use them in their advertisements after the show, and Bill promised America a "redneck tango."
When they hit the ballroom to perform, their "redneck tango" was adorable. Bill's timing wasn't perfect, but he played the role of the hungry beach bum with great intensity, and the live audience ate it up.
The judging trio expressed appreciation for the effort as well. Head judge Len Goodman called it "a cheeseburger tango with plenty of mustard and pickle" and praised the content. Bruno Tonioli quipped that there was "plenty of beef on top but you went a bit cheesy on the bottom," and pointed out timing errors. Carrie Ann Inaba said the dance boasted "a strangely odd combination of humor and passion."
Bill and Emma earned 23 points for their tango, which tied them with "High School Musical" star Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff for last place at the close of the first round of the night's competition. Following the switch up challenge round, however, they found themselves alone at the bottom of the heap with 24 out of 34 possible points. They trail co-leaders Elizabeth Berkley and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy and Amber Riley and her partner Derek Hough by eight points entering week seven.
Since a technical problem resulted in all viewer votes from the Oct. 21 show being discarded, all eight couples, including Bill and Emma, will return to dance again when "Dancing with the Stars" 2013 resumes Oct. 28 on ABC with week seven of the season 17 competition.
