DWI charge after man crashes into pole in Mastic Beach

A Bellport man was arrested Tuesday on drunken driving charges after police said he was drunk behind the wheel when he crashed his car into a pole and seriously injured his passenger, according to a Suffolk County police news release.

Police said Ramson Soper, 22, was arraigned Dec. 25 on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was arrested at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday after he allegedly crashed his 1999 Ford Mustang into a pole at the intersection of Robinwood Drive and Mastic Road in Mastic Beach.

An unidentified passenger in the car was airlifted by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital. Police said he was in serious condition late Tuesday. Soper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, before he was released into police custody.

Police said he spend Christmas Eve in a holding cell at the Seventh Precinct in Shirley and was expected to face a judge Wednesday morning for arraignment on the criminal charge.
