Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson unveiled as Greek demi-God in new 'Hercules' trailer

The first teaser trailer for Hercules, the new Brett Ratner film featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the titular demi-God, was released today. The trailer originally premiered yesterday at CinemaCon 2014 but finally circulated onto the web earlier today. With the recent success of 300: Rise of an Empire, it seems that Hollywood is back to churning out one swords-and-sandals epic after another. This new version follows in the wake of The Legend of Hercules starring Kellan Lutz, which failed to be a big draw at the box office this past January.

Based on the graphic novel “Hercules: The Thracian Wars”, the film takes place a time long after most of the original Greek canon, and finds Hercules living life as a depressed and lonely mercenary. When the King if Thrace meets the legendary hero, he sees a way to make his own army the most powerful in the known world by having Hercules train them. Unaware of the ambitions of this King, Hercules eventually wonders if his service is truly admirable. Of course, none of the new trailer even hints at this. This is just an introductory teaser with a lot impressive shots of Johnson walking through fields of corpses, walking through woods, through winter tundra, all the while looking as badass as humanly possible. The rest includes brief glimpses of battles, special-effects monsters and any other number of typical genre film stuff. Those interested in plot will have to wait until a full trailer is unveiled.

Hercules will open for a wide release on July 25 in both 2D and 3D. Expect the film to open here in the district at Regal Gallery Place and local AMC theaters. The film stars Johnson, Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt, Rebecca Ferguson, Irina Shayk and Rufus Sewell. For more information about the film, check out its official site.
