This Tuesday’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases include a couple award season favorites that you might want to check out if you haven’t seen them already. First there’s Oscar nominee for Best Picture, “Captain Phillips”, a thriller starring Tom Hanks. Cate Blanchett has also been sweeping best actress awards for her performance in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine”. Read about those and this week’s other new releases below, and leave a comment at the bottom letting us know what you’ll be checking out.

Pick of the Week: “Captain Phillips

In this drama directed by Paul Greengrass and based on a true story, Tom Hanks plays Richard Phillips, the captain of the U.S. container ship the Alabama. Far off the coast, Phillips and his crew are taken hostage by Somali pirates led by Muse (Barkhad Abdi), resulting in a standoff the outcome of which is out of both their hands. Runtime: 134 minutes. Rated PG-13 for sustained intense sequences of menace, some violence with bloody images, and for substance use.
