Maybe you've got some movies on DVD and want to save them to your laptop or video capable cell phone so you can watch them somewhere other than home. Maybe you know that's possible but think the software required to do so is cost prohibitive. Not so.
Handbrake "is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder..." It will rip DVDs, or any video source for that matter, and convert it to the format of your choosing, to a folder of your choosing, on your hard drive. Then you can burn it to a disk, upload it to your phone, whatever. All its features might make it seem geek oriented. Don't let that deter you. It's really pretty easy to use. It's available for Mac, Linux and Windows. Best of all... it's free.

I installed this and love it for putting movies on my iPhone.
What I am using is another popular DVD Ripper program: Pavtube DVD Ripper.
I am now using it to rip my favorite DVD movies to MP4 for my iPod.
I prefer the program as its after-sale service is good. Last week, I encountered a problem and sent it to them, they replied and solved my problem on time.
So I think when choosing an appropriate program for ourselves, we should consider not only its quality, functions, but also its after-sale service.
