DVD releases: J. Edgar, more from TIFF'11, and a Genie award nominee

Here is a selection of movies available to Toronto audiences on DVD as of Feb. 21:

Café de Flore (Alliance Films) offers a mystical view of two seemingly unrelated love relationships; one between a mother and her son, set in Paris in 1969 and the second, a present-day love affair between a man and a woman in Montreal. Nominated for 13 Genie Awards including Best Picture (winners to be announced during a gala ceremony March 8, 2012.)

In Fireflies in the Garden (Alliance Films) college graduation reunites a family only to have decades of conflict between an abusive father (Willem Dafoe) and his son (Ryan Reynolds) explode as they come to terms with the sudden death of the family matriarch (Julia Roberts). Principal cast includes Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hayden Panettiere. Originally released in 2008, this movie only recently had a limited theatrical run in the United States. Here in Canada it goes directly to DVD.

In J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Leonardo DiCaprio portrays J. Edgar Hoover in a vivid account of his life and times that revolves around his founding and directorship of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Principal cast includes Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Josh Lucas, Judi Dench and Dermot Mulroney.

In Martha Marcy May Marlene (Fox Searchlight Pictures) Elizabeth Olsen (younger sister to the famous twins Mary-Kate and Ashley) plays an emotionally-damaged young woman trying to reconnect with her family after escaping an abusive cult. It was a Special Presentation at TIFF’11. Principal cast includes John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson, Hugh Dancy and Brady Corbet.

The Rebound (Alliance Films) is a romantic comedy in which a beautiful, suburban woman (Catherine Zeta Jones) dumps her cheating husband, moves to the city and has a hot time with the young man (Justin Bartha) she hires to babysit her kids. Watch what happens to a rebounding cougar when her kids find out she’s having sexual relations with their nanny. Shot in 2008, The Rebound has been seen just about everywhere in the world except North America where it skipped theatres and went straight to DVD.

The Way (Mongrel Media) stars Martin Sheen as a doctor forced to retrieve the bodily remains of his only son who dies while hiking the pilgrimage route of St. James known as The Camino de Santiago. To overcome his profound grief and hopefully gain some insight into his son, the father decides to walk the route for himself. Sheen’s real life progeny Emilio Estevez directs the film, as well as portrays the on-screen son.

Tower Heist (Universal Pictures) is a comedic tale of retribution. Ben Stiller leads a crew of disgruntled employees when their pensions are lost in the shady dealings of a billionaire investor (Alan Alda). They seek revenge by planning a home invasion of the investor’s posh penthouse apartment where he is held under house arrest. They get help from a petty thief played by Eddie Murphy. Cast includes Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Téa Leoni, Michael Peña and Gabourey Sidibe.
