Dutch royals pose for winter pictures on tragic anniversary (Photos)

The Dutch royal family is in Lech, Austria on their annual skiing vacation and posed today for their annual winter photo call. TRH The Prince of Orange, Princess Maxima, and their three daughters posed for the cameras as they do each year. The young Princesses were urged to throw snowballs by the photographers to which their father quickly asked them not to. The future King commented: “Don’t throw snowballs at the press or it will follow you all your lives.HM Queen Beatrix joined the family for a number of photos that showed the genuine warmth the family has for each other. There were twice the number of photographers registered for the shoot as is typically seen; reflecting the worldwide interest of the Queen’s pending abdication. The seasonal photo shoots stem from an agreement with the Dutch media to pose for pictures in exchange for privacy while on holiday.

The day was marked with a bit of sadness, as it was this trip last year which saw Prince Friso caught in a tragic avalanche, leaving him in a comatose state. Prince Friso’s wife Princess Mabel has joined the family in Lech with the couple’s two daughters Countess Luana and Countess Zaria. She chose, however, to skip the photo shoot for obvious “personal reasons”. The state information service RVD released a statement saying Princess Mabel was grateful to the press for respecting her privacy since the accident and hoped this would continue during the visit to Lech.
