Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey will return to San Francisco Performances (SFP) to present a two-concert single-day series of recitals in which he will perform the six solo cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach. These will be given in the order of their BWV catalog numbers, meaning that the first concert will consist of BWV 1007 in G major, BWV 1008 in D minor, and BWV 1009 C major; and the second will offer BWV 1010 in E-flat major, BWV 1011 in C minor, and BWV 1012 in D major. These will be the first concerts in the SFP Virtuosi Series. This will be Wispelwey’s second appearance with SFP, following his recital with pianist Dejan Lazic in 2006.
For this major undertaking Wispelwey will also provide a preview event. This will be held at the Community Music Center (CMC) as part of their 2013–2014 Concert with Conversation Series. Over the course of an hour, Wispelwey will share his thoughts about Bach’s suites, illustrating key points by performing selected movements. He will also entertain questions from the audience as part of the “conversation stage” of the occasion.
This preview event will be given the evening before Wispelwey’s two recitals, taking place on Friday, November 8. It will begin at 6 p.m. in the CMC Capp Street Concert Hall at 544 Capp Street. It will be free to the general public; and, given that these events tend to fill the house, arriving early is advised. Further information may be found on the event page at the CMC Web site.
The two SFP concerts will take place at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (1111 O’Farrell Street, just west of the corner of Franklin Street). Since this is the first concert in the 2013–2014 Virtuosi Series, subscriptions are still available through the Web page describing all of its concerts. Series prices are $170, $280, and $310. Subscriptions may be purchased through a “package” Web page set up by City Box Office. Single tickets are also available for $38 and $70 for each of the two concerts. These may be purchased through the event page for the two recitals. SFP may be reached at 415-392-2545 for further information.
