Dusting off your resume for a job fair

You’re ready to start marketing yourself to prospective employers and are planning to attend a local job fair. If it’s been awhile since you updated your resume, getting the content current and relevant may take some time. With the current competitive job market, determining how your skills need to shine above the other potential candidates requires planning and thought. Here are three things you need to do to ensure you have a resume that is going to represent your value to a company.

  1. Get rid of outdated content. If you were part of an organization in the past and now your involvement wouldn’t matter to a prospective employer, consider removing it. Don’t keep information about jobs from 20 years ago unless the skills you used are similar to the skills you need to use in your next job.
  2. Add details that show your value to the company. Double check your content for meaningful details about the results you have achieved from the actions and responsibilities you had in your work experience. Numerical values and measurements add tangible data to your resume.
  3. Tailor the content to the reader. Having a general resume is fine, but before you head out to a job fair, take a look at which companies will be there and what jobs they are hiring for. Make sure you have copies for each employer that include the company name, job title, and skills in your professional summary on your resume.
