Dustin Lance Black-narrated doc '8: The Mormon Proposition' now online

"8: The Mormon Proposition" is now on demand.

The just-released documentary shows some of the hypocrisy of the Mormon Church, which fought Prop 8 in California, and is now involved in fighting same-sex marriage in their own backyard in Utah.

It's as timely as ever, and now available:

8: The Mormon Proposition (http://www.8themormonproposition.com) on iTunes and Amazon.

Director Reed Cowan was at first planning on making a documentary about gay teen homelessness and suicide in Utah, but he soon realized how the alienation was entrenched in Mormon ideology.

Witness first-hand from youth about what it's like to grow up gay in the shadow of the Mormon Church, in this time that the "Book of Mormon" stage musical is spoofing the same issue across the country and winning Tony Awards in New York.

But this is no laughing matter, because it shows the power of the Religious Right and how those in the Mormon faith turned their attention to the historic campaign to pass Proposition 8 in California believing that it was the cornerstone of an ideology that has worked for decades “to damage gay people and their causes.”

Dustin Lance Black, Narrator

Dustin Lance Black wrote the Academy Award-winning screenplay for "Milk" (see the story about his speech by clicking here), starring Sean Penn about civil rights champion Harvey Milk. Black won two Writers Guild of America Awards. Black’s work as a writer for HBO’s BIG LOVE garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best drama, as well as an Emmy nomination.

A powerful up and coming activist for the LGBT movement, Black was the top entry on a list of openly gay influential people in THE ADVOCATE magazine’s top “Forty under 40” issue in July 2009. With Gus Van Sant as his executive producer, currently Black is in production for his next film, WHAT’S WRONG WITH VIRGINIA, which he both wrote and is now directing starring Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris.

(Lance's first film, has a cameo by this author as the landlord of one of the subjects in his road trip documentary "On the Bus.")
