Dustin Johnson has been suspended from the PGA Tour.. According to a Yahoo! Sports report on August 1 Johnson announced Thursday that he was taking leave from the PGA Tour for "personal challenges" for which he intended to seek "professional help." Unfortunately we are learning today that the "personal challenges" are to deal with a drug problem, and this problem has been going on for quite a while.
Reports indicate Johnson failed drug tests three times. The first was in 2009 for marijuana, followed by a failed test in 2012 for cocaine. Johnson has once again failed for cocaine this year. Everyone knows that drug addiction can be an expensive habit that not only cost you your career but it can ruin your entire life. For Johnson it is clear that he needs more than a few weeks off to try to break these habits.
Johnson's current suspension will cost him possibly millions of dollars as he is now forced to sit out the remainder of the year. He will miss some of the biggest tour dates including the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the Tour Championship.
When Johnson missed 11 weeks in 2012, it was believed that it was due to him injuring himself lifting a jet ski. It later came out that the missed time was due to a suspension for the failed cocaine test.
Johnson is one of the best golfers in the game today. He currently ranks 4th on the FedEx Cup rankings and 16th overall in the world. Johnson is known as the "best golfer never to win a major" in his career. Hopefully Johnson can get the help he needs before it is too late, and still win a major or two.
