Durham MLK Parade: Last call for entries

On Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 12 pm, the 9th annual Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday Parade will begin its march from W.G. Pearson Elementary School (3501 Fayetteville Street). The parade is one way that Durham celebrates and honors Dr. King's life and legacy. In 2010, about 60 organizations particpated in the parade including the NCCU Sound Machine, the North Carolina marching band who made an appearance in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year's MLK parade theme is "I 'Still' Have a Dream." The Honorable Howard Clement III of the Durham City Council will be the parade's grand marshall. It is not too late for local organizations to participate in the parade. The entry deadline is Saturday, January 8, 2011. Entry forms can be completed online or downloaded from Entry fees start at $40 with display formats including walking, horses, motorcycles, cars/trucks and traditional floats. Trophies will be presented for Best in Parade, Best Theme Application and Best Marching Band. The parade will be televised.

Durham small business owners should consider participating in this parade as a way to:

  • advertise products and services with minimal monetary investment
  • interact with the Durham public and other participating organizations (i.e. potential partners)
  • show support for Martin Luther King, Jr's legacy

Current parade sponsors include ABC 11, Hendrick Durham Auto Mall, Mechanics and Farmers Bank, NC Mutual Life Insurance Company, Rejoice! 1410 AM WRJD, and a host of others.
