Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a Tony Award-winning comedy, opened May 23rd at Lincoln Center Theater. It features Jeffrey Bean as Vanya, Sharon Lockwood as Sonia, Artist Josie de Guzman as Masha, and Jay Sullivan as Spike. Debuting actors are Rachael Holmes as Cassandra and Sarah Nealis as Nina. Jonathan Moscone, Artistic Director of California Shakespeare Theater, helms the production and returns after having directed the Alley's 2011 production of Amadeus.
Christopher Durang's new comedy was a hit on Broadway. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike won a 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. Other awards include: the Drama Desk Award, Best Play from the New York Drama Critics Circle, the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama League Award, as well as the Off-Broadway Alliance Award. The play has been praised in Variety, USA Today and New York Magazine.
The story: Vanya and his sister Sonia live in the farmhouse where they spent their childhood years. Their sister Masha escaped the farm life to become a movie star. Masha comes back from her celebrity lifestyle to the farm with her 20-something lover Spike. This kicks of a weekend of sibling hilarious and outrageous rivalry. The family is not the same after this adventurous meeting. The play is recommended for mature audiences due to language.
