Peeps donuts are scheduled to be released nationwide on Monday, March 31, but a survey of several Central Jersey locations revealed that many Dunkin' Donuts began selling the novelty treats as early as this weekend.
One Edison Dunkin' Donuts reported it was out of Peeps donuts by noon on Saturday.
Peeps donuts come in two varieties – green frosted with a pink drizzle or pink (strawberry) frosted with a green drizzle. Both are topped with a mini Peep.
"As America's donut leader, we are always seeking new and innovative donut varieties to help our guests celebrate special moments and occasions," said Stan Frankenthaler, Dunkin' Brands' Executive Chef and Vice President of Production Innovation in a press release carried by the "Wall Street Journal."
He also said: "Peeps are synonymous with fun and happiness, and we are excited to combine two American favorites to create unique flower-shaped donuts adorned with a marshmallow chick that will sweeten any spring or Easter celebration."
Peeps donuts will be available for a limited time only. In May, Dunkin' Donuts will start selling bite-sized Peeps Minis in three flavors: Strawberry Crème, Chocolate Crème and Sour Watermelon, according to the "New York Daily News."
