Dunkin' Donuts adds mobile payments to the menu

Business Insider is reporting that Dunkin' Donuts may soon rival Starbucks with a new mobile app strategy that could center on mobile payments.

Getting your morning caffeine and sweets with a simple touch or tap of the old smartphone could be a big hit for busy commuters swinging by the venerable doughnut establishment morning, noon, and night.

Starbucks consumers' enthusiastic embrace of the Starbucks app as a method of payment is largely a function of the company's fantastically loyal customers. In addition, app rewards, including free drinks on birthdays, likely contribute to even greater app usage.

Although the industry's fastest growing mobile payments solutions are those that center on actual hardware - like PayAnywhere's hugely successful mobile credit card reader - mobile app-based payment solutions are on the rise as well.

If Dunkin' Donuts can come anywhere near the success of Starbucks's mobile payment and loyalty app, which the same report confirms is presently used by 10 million Starbucks customers for an average of 5 million transactions a week, the doughnut titan could soon be glazed with the joys of added revenue.
