'Dungeon Defenders II' announced, enters closed beta

“Dungeon Defenders” is a fun, immersive co-op tower defense title by Trendy Entertainment. Dungeon Defenders II, announced by the company on March 18, is that idea (give or take). The new title is free-to-play with cross-platform multiplayer across PC, Mac, iOS, Web, and Android and is launching in two parts: a new, competitive MOBA mode that is currently in closed beta, and will be playable at PAX East, and an update to the original, which is scheduled for beta late this year, or early next year.

The competitive MOBA mode is currently accepting beta signups at the moment. It will initially feature only a 5v5 map, but on the hero side the company expects it will have 24 to choose from by launch. Some of these will be paid heroes, but the rotating selection of freebies is expected to match “similar free-to-play” titles, such as “League of Legends”.

And, as is usual for the announcement of free-to-play titles, Trendy has already answered the all-important question: will the game be pay-to-win?

“Of course not!” reads the official FAQ. At this time, everything sold in the game are available to free-to-play players through play. All stat items are only awarded through play. Like other free-to-play titles, “Dungeon Defenders II” will feature cosmetic items and boosts that will allow players to level up faster.
