According to Thursday's CBS DFW News, an animal cruelty investigation is underway following a disturbing discovery in Parker County, Texas, this week.

A litter of puppies and their deceased mother were found in a crate where they had been abandoned along a road; the days-old puppies were nursing on the body of their deceased mother, who had been shot in the head. The rescue organization, Angels & Outlaws Second Chance Bully Ranch, issued a plea to their Facebook followers on Wednesday after the abandoned family was discovered:

They were found in Weatherford on the side of the road in a cage their mother was in the cage with them and she had been shot in the head. They were nursing on their dead Momma. We need blankets and sheets and bottles and milk! And if anyone would like to help bottle feed these babies please let me know!

Local authorities are reaching out to the public to help find out who is responsible for dumping the family, and the shooting death of the mother, who was described as a three-year-old shepherd mix. Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler stated:

These puppies were left defenseless and still nursing on their deceased mother,”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Parker County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division at (817) 594-8845 or the Parker County Crime Stoppers Hotline at (817) 599-5555. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
