Dumb Starbucks billed as 'work of art parody' to skirt trademark laws?

Dumb Starbucks is a new coffee shop that looks, smells and tastes just like a regular Starbucks store, but everything has the word "Dumb" in front of it. What would be the reason behind this except for trying to cash in on the Starbucks' popular name?

According to Time Magazine on Feb. 10, the store is considered a work of parody art. Apparently the folks that thought this one up think the store's name is protected under the law because it falls under the umbrella of art.

The store offers everything from "Dumb Caramel Macchiato" to "Dumb Chai Tea Latte" and even when ordering the sizes available are Dumb "Venti" to "Dumb Tall." The Dumb Starbucks experience came with a FAQ sheet that employees handed out to the Dumb customers.

The sheet says that Dumb Starbucks is a real business but “for legal reasons Dumb Starbucks needs to be categorized as a work of parody art.” The store started a buzz on Twitter, but a tweet from Mark McCune probably summing up the fate of this new store saying "Go buy some @dumbstarbucks before dumb lawyers get to it."

This looks like an attempt at outsmarting the U.S. trademark system with some type of loophole that someone discovered. The Dumb Starbucks opened their new concept store in Los Angeles this weekend and because of their opening special of free drinks, the Dumb line was out the door waiting for a Dumb knockoff beverage of their choice.

Will the other or original Starbucks be flattered that an entire store opened up as a parody art of Starbucks? Probably not, but no word
