Duluth East high school ran into a buzz saw Friday night in their game against Grand Rapids at Public School Stadium.

Grand Rapids came out passing. They passed on first down. They passed on second down, and sometimes they even passed on fourth down. As it was a running play was almost like a surprise trick play.

The Thunderhawks scored in the first quarter on a four yard run by senior Matt Dorholt and senior Kirk Watson kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

On offense East sputtered. Their first half highlights were a nine yard run by senior quarterback Zach Farmer and a 19 yard pass from Farmer to senior Nick Carlson. But, the Thunderhawks had an answer for almost everything they tried.

On the defensive side East was unable to cope with the Grand Rapids passing game. Thunderhawk junior quarterback Austin Pohlen had touchdown passes of seven yards to Dorholt, 28 yards to junior Patrick Flaherty and 32 yards to senior Jacob Sutherland.

Sutherland also ran an interception back for another touchdown.

To put an exclamation point to the type of night East was having, Farmers was tackled in the end zone for a touchback to make the final score Grand Rapids 40, East 0.

The loss drops Duluth East to 0-2 for the season.
