Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, the toll rate for passenger cars going through the main toll plaza of the Dulles Toll Road will increase by seventy-five cents to $2.50, according to a press release issued by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The toll rate for the on and off ramps will remain unaffected. The rate for all other vehicle types will increase by the same amount. There will be no rate hike in 2015.
Travelers driving to the airport will be unaffected by this rate hike because there is no toll on the portion of the highway to and from the airport. For commuters looking to use the airport access road to avoid the toll, the Virginia State Police and Airports Authority Police will increase enforcement of people "backtracking," or using the airport access road when they are not headed to the airport.
Violators will be hit with three points on their license and a fine of $92 or more. This higher level of enforcement will reduce congestion for drivers actually going to the airport.
The toll road is solely maintained by toll revenue and no tax dollars go towards it.
