Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: William and Kate's royal baby due in July (Video)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby is due in July, and rumors of twins have also been debunked. The royal couple issued a short statement through the Prince of Wales website on January 14, 2013, saying simply:

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July. The Duchess's condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.”

The Independent is among several papers counting on fingers to conclude that the Duchess of Cambridge has probably had her 12-week checkup, which puts the due date in mid-July. The Telegraph is reporting the same speculation about the checkup as fact, and is trying to make the due date shoe-horn in with Prince William's June 21 birthday or the late Diana, Princess of Wales' July 1 birthday.

The lack of detail should have served as a clue to leave the couple alone, but newspapers have run with the story and are adding details such as “child will probably be a Cancer” and “Ladbroke's is now taking bets on the arrival date.” Diana and Elizabeth are reportedly firm favorites for a girl's name.

The firm use of “a baby” by the Palace spokesman confirms that there will be only one child. According to The Telegraph, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is unlikely to have any public appearances in the next few weeks, but is expected to return to the public eye “in the near future.”
