Mark Martin captures the pole for the Daytona 500
Mark Martin captures the pole for the Daytona 500

Saturday's Daytona 500 qualifying session not only set the front row -- pole sitter Mark Martin and outside front row occupant Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- it also determined the lineup for Thursday's Gatorade Duel 150-mile races.

"Ro have the 5 and 88 on the front row is really gratifying for us," Martin said. "I think it will be a big shot in the arm for us for the rest of the year."

As the pole award winner, Martin will lead the field to the green in the first Duel. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start the second Duel in the first position.

The starting grids for the Gatorade Duels are set based on lap times from Saturday's qualifying. Cars are ordered based on lap times from fastest to slowest. Then the cars in the odd positions make up the field for the first Duel, and the cars in the even positions make up the second Duel. (* = go or go home entries)

Of the go or go home cars, Bill Elliott, Scott Speed and Joe Nemechek turned in fast enough laps on Saturday to lock themselves into the Daytona 500 field. Also, Bobby Labonte will receive the past champion's provisional if his Gatorade Duel finish isn't good enought to get him into the field for Sunday's 500.

“We worked hard,” Elliott said of the No. 21's teams qualifying efforts. “We did our homework.”

The two highes finishing go or go home teams in each Duel that didn't guarantee their Daytona 500 starting spot in Saturday's qualifying will get into the 500.

The Gatorade Duels will air live on SPEED, with the first one scheduled to start around 2 p.m. ET on Thursday and the second one to take the green flag shortly after the conclusion of the first.
