It just keeps on getting better for the Anaheim Ducks. On March 18, in the midst of beating the San Jose Sharks by a score of 5-3, it was announced the team signed 2011 NHL MVP Corey Perry, to an eight year contract extension.
Just ten days earlier, Anaheim had signed Ryan Getzlaf to an eight year extension as well. The Perry deal virtually guarantees the lethal one-two punch will both finish out their respective careers, in Anaheim.
They were both members of the Ducks 2007 Stanley Cup championship team.
From Ducks Executive VP/GM Bob Murray - "We are excited that Corey has committed to us for the next eight years. Similar to the case with Ryan Getzlaf, Corey wanted to stay in Anaheim and be part of our organization, long term. He is an exceptional player who competes with heart and soul and has won at every level."
From Corey Perry - "Staying in Anaheim has always been my first choice. This is a great place to play and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to remain here. I want to thank the Samuelis and the entire Ducks organization for their belief in me. I'm pleased to have this done so our focus can remain on our ultimate goal - bringing another Stanley Cup to Orange County."
The Ducks are still flying high. Even with Perry out of the lineup due to a four game suspension, they are 2-0-1 in their last three games. He will serve the final game of his suspension on Wednesday night, as the Ducks host the Chicago Blackhawks at Honda Center in Anaheim.
Anaheim trails Chicago by only 5 points for best overall record in the league, and have a game in hand.
Perhaps overshadowed by the Perry signing, rookie forward Emerson Etem notched his first NHL goal in the monday night game vs San Jose. He also had an assist, and was named #1 Star of the game.
The Ducks have now won 12 straight home games, and are 7-0-3 in overall in their last 10 games.
Corey Perry is set to return to the lineup on Friday, March 22 vs Detroit Red Wings, in Anaheim.
