It was a big Friday for the Anaheim Ducks. First they signed captain and leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf to an eight year contract extension, and then performed admirably Friday night in defeating the Calgary Flames 4-0.
Getzlaf, and Bobby Ryan led the Ducks in scoring with a goal and an assist each, while Viktor Fasth made 29 saves for the shutout.
Due to the intense rivalry between Swedish and Finnish hockey, it is interesting that the young Fasth, who has been a red hot rookie this season, clearly outplayed the more experienced Flames goaltender of Miikka Kiprusoff.
Fasth is from Kalix, Sweden, while Kiprusoff is from Turku, Finland.
Kiprusoff meanwhile played in his second game after suffering a medial collateral ligament injury earlier this season in Detroit.
With the loss, the Flames drop to 9-9-4 on the season and remain four points back of the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference. The Flames will next play two consecutive games in Los Angeles tonight and Monday.
