The Anaheim Ducks home opener is coming up, and to the surprise of many, the Ducks have started the season 2-0. Not only that, but they have already scored 12 goals.
First they ruined the Vancouver Canucks' home opener on Jan. 19th, when they shelled newly anointed starting goaltender Corey Schneider for five goals. He was lifted in favor of former #1 goalie, Roberto Luongo in the second period.
Anaheim then hung 2 goals on Luongo, to cap off a 7-3 victory in front of the 409th consecutive sellout crowd in Vancouver.
Two nights later, in Calgary, the Ducks raced out to a 3-0 first period lead, only to see it evaporate into a 3-3 tie game 1:13 into the second period.
The Ducks then scored 2 third period goals, and held on for a 5-4 victory over the Flames.
The pleasant surprise, has been one most unexpected goal scoring source.
Daniel Winnick has scored four goals; two against Vancouver, two against Calgary. Winnick has been skating on the third line with Saku Koivu and Andrew Cogliano. Winnick only had 8 goals in 84 games played last season. Let's hope he can keep it up.
Friday night's home opener is against the Canucks. You can be sure they will be looking to return the favor, and ruin the Ducks' home debut.
In honor of Teemu Selanne, all fans in attendance on Friday night, will receive a commemorative #8 Selanne T-shirt.
The 42 year-old ageless wonder has announced this will be his final NHL season. In the first two games, the Finnish Flash already has 2 goals and 2 assists. It looks like he plans on going out in style. He scored twice in the season opener in Vancouver.
Friday night should be a great atmosphere. Be there if you can.
The Ducks end the short home stand with a game the next night, against the Nashville Predators.
They will then travel to San Jose for a game against the Sharks on Tuesday night, before returning home to face the Minnesota Wild on Friday night, the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night, and the Sharks on Monday night. A homestand which features 3 games in 4 nights. Oh, the joys of a compacted regular season.
Are the 2-0 Ducks actually for real ?
Judging by the schedule, it won't take long to find out.
