'Duck Dynasty' update: Social media backlash over Phil Robertson's suspension

There has been a whirlwind of “Duck Dynasty” activity over the past 24 hours that followed Phil Robertson’s anti-gay sentiment, which was published in GQ. GLAAD fired back and A&E suspended the Duck Commander, which drew high praise from the LGBT organization. However, on Thursday Social media has erupted in a backlash over the patriarch’s removal from filming and are demanding Phil Robertson’s reinstatement based upon the American’s right for freedom of speech.

A Facebook page dedicated to the Phil Robertson cause began late on Wednesday and in less than 24 hours has ascertained over 400,000 likes, and the numbers continue to grow. Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson is put back on “Duck Dynasty” was put into place to “show support for the freedom of speech of Americans.”

Unless Phil is reinstated to the show, we refuse to watch the A&E Channel!

Wayne Dupree, of the Wayne Dupree Show, posted this YouTube video in reaction to Phil Robertson's suspension entitled, “Hey A&E Embrace the Suck! If GLAAD can protest so can we! Bring Phil Robertson back NOW!”

Additionally, a petition has surfaced, which asks A&E to “bring Phil Robertson back”, and of course Twitter has been crammed with reverberations against A&E’s decision to dismiss the patriarch of the ‘Duck Dynasty”, a particularly strong sentiment that resonates the emotion from many fans of the show.

What are your thoughts? Should A&E hold its ground and keep Phil Robertson off of “Duck Dynasty”or does the Duck Commander have every right to speak his mind, as an American, even if what he said offended the gay community?

Update: The Robertson family has issued a statement.
