Duck Dynasty ‘Duck the Halls Family Christmas’ gains during Phil Robertson issue

The Duck Dynasty family Christmas album continues to gain sales despite recent controversy surrounding the A&E show's star Phil Robertson. Recent reports suggest that the top 10 album will have a 16% gain to make it the year’s second-biggest selling Christmas album.

According to Billboard.com on Dec. 19, “Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas” is on pace to sell 125,000 copies of the album for the past week. It sold 108,000 copies the week ending Dec. 15, suggesting that controversy isn’t hurting it. The recent suspension of star Phil Robertson from the show due to remarks made about homosexuality during a GQ Magazine interview has been among the hot topics in the news over the past week, which could be providing the album a boost.

Robertson compared homosexuality to bestiality in that interview which went viral on various social networks, and ultimately led to him being put “under hiatus from filming indefinitely.” Other reports have indicated that the Robertson family has been discussing the controversy with the A&E network in an effort to continue their reality TV series.

It’s expected that “Duck the Halls,” currently on sale at Amazon.com, will end up at around the No. 5 spot on Billboard’s album chart for the week. The album trails only Kelly Clarkson’s new “Wrapped in Red” holiday album when it comes to top holiday-themed albums for 2013. One of the other newer albums released for this holiday season is Mary J. Blige's "A Mary Christmas."

Duck Dynasty” first premiered on A&E back in March of 2012 with season 1. Its latest season, the fourth in the series, ended on Dec. 11, with a DVD and Blu-ray due out Jan. 7, 2014. Season five is expected to debut on Jan. 15, 2014.
