Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, who is pregnant with her first child with Prince William, attended the unveiling of her first official portrait at London’s National Portrait Gallery, E! News reported on Friday, Jan. 11.
The private viewing of Kate Middleton’s first official royal portrait was attended by the Duchess, husband Prince William, Kate’s parents Michael and Carole Middleton, sister Pippa Middleton and brother James Middleton.
The first official royal portrait of the pregnant Duchess has drawn some criticism. The artist changed Kate’s eye color to “better match her blouse.” Middleton told reporters she thought it was “brilliant.” Prince William agreed, saying the portrait is “absolutely beautiful.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Middleton family met with portrait artist, Paul Emsley after two sittings with the Duchess, who is both serious and smiling, back in May and again in June.
Emsley, who was personally chosen by the Duchess of Cambridge, explained that he wanted to capture Kate’s natural, rather than official self. “I think it was the right choice in the end to have her smiling. That’s really who she is, I think,” Paul Emsley explained.
