Dry and fair weather through midweek with moderating temperatures (Video)

High pressure, anchored over the eastern seaboard of the United States, provided a cold start to the morning across the region. Temperatures dipped into the single digits (above zero) and teens. As the day progresses, the large area of high pressure will continue to move eastward, away from the region, and a southerly flow will transport milder air into the area. The warm up looks to persist through the coming weekend.

The next shot of precipitation looks to come as the work week comes to a close, and a system organizes over the southern states. The system is forecast to lift quickly northeast to be over the Great Lakes by Friday afternoon. The Capital Region will be on the eastern side of this low pressure area, thus persistent southerly flow into the area will allow for warmer temperatures and better chances for primarily rainfall to occur as opposed to frozen precipitation, though precipitation may start out as a mix of snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain, the changeover to liquid should come relatively quickly. Some exceptions to the quick changeover may occur in the sheltered valley locations, and across higher terrain areas where pockets of colder air may linger a tad longer.

Behind the system forecast for the end of the week will come an unsettled weather pattern to open up the new work week next week. Several disturbances look to pass through the region with perhaps a stronger frontal system passing through the area during the middle to later portions of next week. This may set the stage for a resurgence of much colder air into the region thereafter.
