A drunk driver slammed into a multi-car accident on I-10 in Metarie Thursday night at approximately 8 pm that had already caused lane closures on the interstate making a bad situation worse. The accident occurred near the Bonnabel Blvd. exit. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Justin St. Mard, 36, from Metairie, LA.
St. Mard's slammed into the back of a Motor Assist vehicle which was at the scene of the original accident and had a flashing arrow directing traffic around the accident, as well as lights from several police vehicles on the scene. Mard continued on another 240 feet and also hit a tow truck and another vehicle on the side of the road before coming to a complete halt.
Trooper Melissa Matey said the accident involved five vehicles. Two people, Mard and one of the Motor Assist drivers were taken to the hospital. Mard was arrested upon release from the hospital with a second arrest for DWI, and other charges related to the accident, including reckless operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a license. Mard was also arrested in July for a DWI according to the police report.
