Drudge Report: Obama Christmas delivery spurs political flashback

On Jan. 2, 2014, over on the Drudge Report Twitter page, folks are responding to news that a high profile USPS Christmas delivery from the First Family went astray. One would never think that this sort of thing would happen to the president; after all, despite Megyn Kelly's claim of a white Santa, a poll found "Santa is a Democrat."

A resident of Chicago suburbs, Alane Church, erroneously received a package that provides a peek into the private life of the Obama family. It was a homemade photo scrapbook of the Obama family intended for "Mama Kaye," the godmother of the Obama girls, Sasha and Malia. According to a Politico report, "A picture of the gift showed a tag addressed to 'Mama Kaye and Papa Wellington,' from 'Barack, Michelle and the girls.'"

Steve Dawson reflection on the contents of the gift was a flashback to former presidential gifts. He tweeted, "Pretty much sums up his entire presidency -- gifts of himself and always about the 'O.'"

Back before the Obama administration hired a protocol secretary for the president, Obama was, indeed, panned for what some presidential etiquette experts considered eyebrow raising errors, primarily in bowing and gifting. Although the president does not personally select his dignitary gifts, his first presidential gifts resulted in some embarrassing press.

In particular, the London newspapers howled when British Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited the White House. From the Browns, the president was presented with "a pen holder crafted from the timbers of the 19th century British warship HMS President (whose sister ship, HMS Resolute, provided the wood for the Oval Office's desk), Obama offered up ... 25 DVDs of American movie classics."

It got worse before it got better: Obama gave the Queen of England an iPod reported to be from Best Buy. The British press was appalled.

Since then Obama has obviously shown he is a quick learner. So much so that Valerie Jarrett, his personal advisor claims, "His gift-giving has improved with office." However, it's possible that Drudge Twitter followers aren't impressed.
