It has truly been a whirlwind of a couple of months for Travis Drow.

The 16-year old jazz trumpeter has been splitting time between picking up awards and checks for his prowess on the horn.

That is when he isn’t in class at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts.

Add gigging with his eponymous trio or quartet on a regular basis at the Jazz Gallery of the Arts, The Jazz Estate and VIA Downer Pizzeria to the number of things on his long and getting longer to-do list.

You get the distinct impression that Drow is just getting warmed up.

One simply cannot imagine what happens when he hits that stride. Mercy!

He is cultivating an ever-growing fan base.

Word has definitely gotten out about this young cat sporting a look and hairstyle reminiscent of the great Chet Baker.

In February, Drow, as part of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music’s Batterman Ensemble, brought home Outstanding Soloist honors at the prestigious Charles Mingus Competition in New York.

In March, he dropped in to do a couple of numbers and brought home a $500 check from the annual Jazz Unlimited High School Scholarship auditions at the Steinway Gallery.

In April, he was a part of the group named Outstanding Combo at a competition in Appleton.

His cheerleader-in-chief, mom Pam Eckoldt, his vocalist/girlfriend/bandmate, Taylor Hensel, and many more fans of the genre turn out whenever he is playing.

They’ve discovered this now not-so-hidden gem on the music scene.

Drow is an outlier in every sense of the word.

He is well on his way to putting in his 10,000 hours to excelence.

Not unlike Steve Jobs and Tiger Woods, only with a mouthpiece, valves and a hunk of brass.

Drow eats, drinks and sleeps JAZZ!

And he cooks in the kitchen as well as on stage.

He will often post pictures of his culinary creations on Facebook (napkin not included).

All that’s left for his fans to do is sit back and enjoy.
