With the on-going drought, the area flirted with Stage 4 drought restrictions in spite of the 1.25 inches received a few days ago and the six inches three weeks before that. My garden was never fully planted because of the drought. My mother gave me one of the few surviving pink roses from her garden that bloomed. As the area was increasingly urged to pray for rain continually, every drop was crucial. Stage 4 still lingered closely. Making a potpourri of pink rose petals and learning how to conserve water during this tough time, gave a great lesson in green living and fulfilled the Biblical story of the Shrewd Business Manager.
For drought purposes people in Wichita County and the surrounding counties were urged to pray for rain to avoid Stage 4 drought. The weatherman on KFDX News Channel 3 at Noon said Stage 4 restrictions took place when the combined lake levels dropped to 30% or below. At this time, the lake levels were at 32.1%. Biblical scripture said this about continual prayer:
1Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV) 17 Pray without ceasing.
In the Parable of the Shrewd Business Manager, found in Luke 16 1-15 (KJV) there were two things:
- Stewardship, the responsible overseeing and protection of somethingconsidered worth caring for and preserving: New regulatory changes resulted in better stewardship of lands that were crucial for open space and wildlife habitat.
- God’s teaching on want by the Pharisees (See Exodus 20: 3, 17)
16 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.
3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.
4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
5 So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?
6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.
8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.
10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?
13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.
15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
For the rose potpourri one needed:
For me, saving water was crucial. Since Stage 3 Drought Emergency, the apartment complex had made me pay a portion of its water bill on and off since March of this year. The conscience effort by me in conserving water was paramount.
- In the kitchen: my wetting the sponge with water and soap, then washing the dishes in the sink and rinsing them off all at once saved time and money. There was never any need in using the dishwasher because it was only me.
- In the bathroom: when washing my face or brushing my teeth, the water was only turned on to wet the washcloth or toothbrush . In the shower, water was used to wet the wash cloth body, hair or rinse off the hair and body.
- In the laundry: cold water was used to wash both loads. It got stains out better too.
By making a pink rose potpourri and conserving water, my stewardship of limited resources during the drought were put to good use while everyone was urged to continue to pray for rain. There was a lesson in green living too as well as a fulfillment of scripture.
