How we love and how we operate in relationships can be seen in the characteristics of the signs that our Venus and Jupiter are in, natally.
Whenever a friend or client brings me their latest love interest’s date of birth, after glancing at the Sun, Moon and Ascendant, I head straight to Venus, and then Jupiter. The two planets and the signs they’re in, and house location, will tell the story of how the person tends to operate in love, in relationship and in all those other deep and gooey places.
So, the common cliché inquiring about a potential lover's Sun sign probably wasn't started by an astrologer! The Sun is going to tell part of the story about a potential lover; Venus will tell most of it; Jupiter will fill in the blanks.
How do you love? How does your lover love?
Venus is how we operate in a personal relationship. Jupiter is how we operate in a social relationship. In relationships, there are obvious overlaps since we relate on many different levels to the people in our lives.
From Astrology, A Cosmic Science, by the gifted astrologer Isabel Hickey:
Venus is our capacity to attract and appreciate the things of the physical world, whether emotional, physical, mental or spiritual things. Venus defines the type of people we draw to us, based on our social and personal values. Venus represents personal affections, social urges, beauty, art attraction and cohesion, melody and song, and love of luxury.
Jupiter is our capacity to expand and extend ourselves. Jupiter represents the urge for self-improvement through participation in the larger whole. It urges us to go forth exploring life; understanding prosperity, abundance, faith and optimism.
Look at the characteristics of the sign your natal Venus and Jupiter are in; these characteristics describe how you love and how you tend to operate in relationships; how you relate to others and extend yourself. The same is true of your beloved, or potential beloved.
The glyph for Venus represents a goddess or flower ready to attract pollination. Our Venus energy gets us ready to be pollinated, or not, according to how we interpret and then act on the impulse from the energy.
The glyph for Jupiter symbolizes arms raised to reach the highest point of consciousness and flung out releasing the goodness of the world. Our Jupiter energy expands and extends who we are out onto others.
The sign Venus is in for women indicates the qualities she is looking for in herself. The sign Venus is in for men indicates the qualities he is looking for in a woman. Venus represents the psychological influence of the mother.
The 4-minute rule of horoscopes
Natally, Venus will either be in the same sign as the Sun, or one of the two signs on either side. In order for accurate planet and sign designation, please consult a qualified astrologer – birth time has to be accurate within four minutes; this becomes especially critical on days when a planet is changing signs.
Where's your Venus?
Venus in Aries: Impulsive and immature approach to love; easily hurt. There can be a “love them, leave them” attitude due to mistaking sexual attraction for love. You must look for deeper qualities in your mates or a hasty marriage may result which rarely lasts. Can be in love with love. You have the ability to get what you want from life.
Venus in Taurus (Ruler): This is an excellent position for this planet because Venus rules Taurus. You are demonstrative and affectionate as well as passionate and extremely possessive. Physical and sensual responses to emotions and feelings are strongly accentuated. Material possessions can be important. You like comfort and domestic life. You have a strong feeling that the future will take care of itself.
Venus in Gemini: Emotions are ruled by your mind. You have the ability to stand back and see other people for what they are and what makes them behave as they do. Enjoy the fun and excitement of love, but fear its obligations. You enjoy a variety of pleasures. You understand passion, but don’t feel it too strongly yourself. You’re an entertaining companion. It may be hard for you to decide on one love when there are so many from which to choose. Often, there are two important loves in the life, though not always at the same time.
Venus in Cancer: You have magnetism and sympathy and can be quite changeable. Security is important to you. If you feel unloved you can be prone to debilitating dis-eases. You’re susceptible to flattery. You have a strong tie to family, especially your mother. You may allow loved ones to take advantage of you. You have a strong imagination.
Venus in Leo: Strong will, honest, frank, generous, attractive (especially to the opposite sex), kind, compassionate, and cannot be talked into anything unless you want to be. Can be in love with love. Fun-loving, loyal, affectionate. You like to entertain in a grand manner. You expect too much of people and are easily hurt. Watch tendency to become too preoccupied with your physical appearance, when you should be developing your inner potential. You prefer dynamic, aggressive, powerful individuals as opposed to unassuming, meek, and passive individuals.
Venus in Virgo (Fall): With this position, you must learn to be loving. This placement is the signature of one who has been unloving and superficial in past lifetimes; one who has not learned that when criticism comes in the door, Love departs. Fastidiousness and purity are strong, but may not relate to others easily. Inclined to put off marriage because you see so many imperfections. Strong desire to serve.
Venus in Libra (Ruler): You’re romantic but steadfast. There is a need to be wanted. Easily hurt. Marriage is a necessity for your personal fulfillment. Difficulty in living in a discordant atmosphere, which causes health difficulties. Must watch your tendency to expect your spouse to conform to your idea of the perfect mate. You need a feeling of continuity and permanence. In this sign, Venus is at home and at her best. Your emotions are direct and clear; often expressing a “young at heart” nature.
Venus in Scorpio (Detriment): This is a challenging placement for Venus because the individual with this aspect unconsciously wants to feel unwanted and may create circumstances that uphold this attitude until the emotions involved are resolved. You may have difficulty expressing affections. Unreasoning jealousy, infatuations, affairs and misalliances can be present for this position.
This is a karmic placement due to the misuse of the love principle. You can be passionate and inhibited at the same time. You need to learn the value of self-control. Strong sense of deep religious devotion which can serve as an outlet for your overcharged emotions. Your love nature needs regeneration and reorientation. Can be passionate and inhibited at the same time.
Venus in Sagittarius: Demonstrative and friendly in affection. A breezy attitude toward love. Idealizes love. In romance, you want a companion more than a romantic partner. Freedom is as important as affection. The demands of relationship can create stress and disease.
Venus in Capricorn: People with this aspect frequently rise to positions of authority. Love is weighed with practical consideration. Strong desire to protect yourself from hurt. Basic selfishness must be overcome.
Venus in Aquarius: Charming, happy, original, but also, cool, calm, and detached. This detachment is beneficial because these individuals, as a rule, are never possessive of people or things. Emotions are filtered through the mind. May have been born into a home where lovingness was never expressed. Need to learn warmth and understanding
Venus in Pisces (Exalted): Can be too easygoing and submissive. Psychic. Attracted to the underdog. Idealize your mates. You suffer through love, but do so willingly. You must learn to love without thought of personal reward. You have a loving and friendly approach to the world, and a general attitude of optimism.
