The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, CPSC, has issued a recall alert to consumers in Grand Rapids as well as across the country of drop-side cribs sold exclusively at JC Penney Stores.
Close to17,000 Rockland Furniture Drop-side Cribs are being recalled due to entrapment, suffocation and fall hazards. The cribs are manufactured by Nan Far Woodworking Co., Ltd. of Taiwan.
The cribs' drop sides can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing part of the drop side to fall out of position, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged or entrapped, and possibly lead to strangulation or suffocation. A child can also fall out of the crib due to incorrect assembly or with age-related wear and tear.
Five incidents involving malfunctions or detachments have been reported including one report of a child who became entrapped and sustained minor scratches and bruises.
The following six Rockland Furniture drop-side crib models are included in this recall:
- 343-8124 Nightingale Spindle Drop-Side Crib
- 343-8280 Cottage Standard Drop-Side Crib Version 1
- 343-8271 Cottage Standard Drop-Side Crib Version 2
- 343-9105 Drop-Side Crib and Changer
- 343-8191 Renew Standard Drop-Side Crib
- 343-8192 Renew Convertible Drop-Side Crib
All of the above cribs were sold at JC Penney stores and online from January 2005 through December 2008 for between $150 and $400.
Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Nan Far Woodworking for a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop side. Call Nan Far at 877-967-5770 or visit their website.
