A driver was ejected and seriously injured after leaving the roadway and crashing into a tree at a high rate of speed Friday evening in Alpharetta.

And police are trying to determine if another vehicle was involved and if the crash resulted from drag racing.

At 6:31 p.m. officers and firefighters responded to the wreck at the intersection of Westside Parkway and Hembree Road, according to Alpharetta police.

When officers arrived they found a victim who had been ejected from a 1997 beige Lincoln Mark VIII after the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, police spokesman Mr. George Gordon said.

“The initial investigation by Alpharetta traffic specialist indicates the Lincoln Mark VIII may have been traveling at a very high rate of speed and that a second vehicle may have been involved,” Mr. Gordon said.

“An investigation is underway to determine if a second vehicle was involved, if a vehicle to vehicle impact took place or if the act of drag racing was involved.”

The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety is seeking to determine if anyone witnessed the crash itself, any type of drag racing event or a possible second vehicle involved in the crash, Mr. Gordon said.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, remained in serious condition Saturday at the hospital, police said.

Any possible witnesses are asked to contact Officer Swerdlove at (678) 297-6367.
