Illinois Legislature passing bill to legalize the issuance of driver’s licenses to non-registered (Illegal) Aliens living in the state of Illinois. One huge motivating factor they give as their reason for even suggesting such a bill is that… by allowing illegal aliens to have a valid driver’s license the highways of Illinois will become safer for all of us.
Surely, they are not suggesting that just because a person has a driver’s license, he or she automatically becomes a much better, thereby safer, driver? Now, I will admit I am not the world’s deepest thinker or the wisest sage one should go to for life-altering direction, however, wouldn’t common sense tell us that if people are already driving vehicles without a driver’s license they will probably do everything they can to drive within the speed limit and drive as safely as humanly possible? I’m just sayin’!
My take on this Illinois thing, and any other state that suggests the same solution to its immigration problem, it’s all a blatant political ploy to grab more and more of the Hispanic vote. And, if that’s not the reason, then I would have to guess those voting aye on such a bill are just a group of unlearned, mentally challenged legislators who should never have been voted into office in the first place.
Now, if we could get serious about some comprehensive legislation getting passed that would allow illegals to come forward, and pay some form of remuneration (fine) to specific needy charities, I would go along with issuing a Visitor’s Work Permit. This permit would acknowledge their non-resident status and allow them to remain as a Documented Alien (Legal), paying all necessary and relevant taxes, and be placed in the back of the line for subsequent citizenship… after they’ve learned our language, other requisites, and the proper number of years have passed.
A driver’s license could be issued to those of the group who would pass the normal driving test, but the License itself would be one of a different shape and color, and the words ‘DOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT’ prominently displayed on its front immediately under a picture and thumb print of the immigrant. That kind of plan makes sense to me.
