Gunmen in a speeding car opened fire on a crowd standing outside an apartment building in Washington, D.C. in the very early hours Monday, leaving eleven people injured, one seriously, The Washington Post reported on March 11. The group of people standing in front of the building scattered and scrambled for cover as shots were fired in rapid succession.
The drive-by shooting happened in the area New York Avenue and the 1200 blockof North Capitol Street sometime between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. police Chief Cathy Lanier said. Thisis the same are where shootings occurred on consecutive weekends in October 2012. It is not clear if the shootings are connected.
Two cars sped away from the scene of the crime. Police say the shots came from at least two cares and are looking for the two cars, one an older-model dark BMW, the other a light or grey sedan.
The D.C. Metro police released the surveillance video in hopes someone will come forward and identify the gunmen. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and collecting bullet fragments and other evidence in order to determine a motive for the shooting.
Chief Lanier said it is not yet known why the crowd was standing outside at that time of the morning, although the club across the street had closed approximately 15 minutes before the drive-by shooting occurred.
