You’re like me, I know it. You’re looking for a way to drink at a discount, short of sitting on the porch with a case of Red, White and Blue. And I’ve been researching an article to help decide which Mug Club is right for you. And here’s another way to scoop up a discount.

This week, the second edition of the Chicago Drink Deck debuts, with a launch party Wednesday, September 8. The party is 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Motel Bar in River North, 600 W. Chicago Ave. at N. Larabee. The party features complimentary hors d’ouevres, Pacifico beer and Absolut vodka cocktails.

The Drink Deck, billed as “The bar enthusiast’s travel guide to Chicago,” is a full deck of playing cards. Each  face card features an advertisement for a Chicago bar, and doubles as a $10 gift certificate with $30 purchase at each bar. A small perforated corner on each card is collected for the discount, so when you’ve hit all 52 bars, you’re left with a serviceable playing deck.

Each deck can be purchased for $30 at the launch party, which includes free blackjack played with the Drink Deck for prizes from participating advertisers.

“I wanted to make it affordable for people to explore bars in new neighborhoods. I am thrilled to introduce the second edition of Drink Deck with 52 of Chicago’s best bars,” said Will Glass, creator of Drink Deck. The certificates have no expiration date. An edition for Portland, OR is also in the works.

Decks can also be purchased online at thedrinkdeck.com. The site’s blog also has Google Maps showing the locations of the bars in both the first and second editions.

Some of the bars taking part in the second edition of Drink Deck are Sheffield’s, Jak’s Tap, the Beer Bistro, Moonshine, the Bluebird, Handlebar, Revolution Brewing, and Southport Lanes.

As this is posted during the Labor Day weekend, it's still time to ask everyone to remember that law enforcement is out in, well, "force," cracking down on impaired or drunk drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's campaign against Impaired Driving includes the easiest tips to stay safe: bring a Designated Driver or use public transportation. Nearly all the establishments advertised in the Drink Deck are less than a few blocks away from a CTA train or bus route. The NHTSA's "Driving Buzzed is Driving Drunk" Facebook page has a list of companies offering safe ride services. In our area, they are:

  • Safe Ride Solutions, 208-938-4500. Offering safe rides home from business events using bonded retired or off-duty civic officials (Cook County).
  • U Drink I Drive, 888-808-8343. A driver takes you home in your own vehicle for a base fee plus mileage, 8:00 p.m.-4:00 a.m. Monday-Saturday; 2:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. Sunday.
