During the Colonial Athletic Association Media Day on Tuesday October 18th, the Drexel women’s basketball team was tied with Old Dominion for fifth-place in the pre-season poll as voted on by the CAA coaches and media members. Star forward Elena Delle Donne and the University of Delaware Blue Hens were picked to win the CAA after their trip to the CAA title game last season. The Blue Hens are followed by VCU, James Madison and Hofstra, respectively, in the pre-season poll, and then Drexel and ODU round out the top half of the poll.
After a Second Team All-CAA selection as a junior, senior forward Kamile Nacickaite was selected to the pre-season All-CAA First Team. Nacickaite is joined by three other returning starters this season – guard Hollie Mershon and forwards Tyler Hale and Taylor Wootton. Also, senior point guard Marisa Crane returns to the starting lineup this season after missing more the half the 2010-2011 season with a knee injury.
Even though the Dragons were picked to finish fifth in the pre-season poll, Coach Denise Dillon knows her squad is capable of great things this season. In addition to the starters returning, key bench players like Ayana Lee and Fiona Flanagan are back and redshirt-freshman forward Jackie Schluth is back after suffering a knee injury last season. Freshman guard Tiffany Johnson joins the Dragons to add depth in the backcourt and transfers Nicole Jones (UMass) and Abby Redick (Virginia Tech) will add depth in the frontcourt.
The Drexel women start their 2011-2012 campaign on November 11th at home against Long Island University in the first round of the Women’s Pre-Season National Invitational Tournament.
