Despite four players scoring in double-figures, the Drexel Dragons lost to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles by a score of 73-67 in the first round of the Women's NIT on Friday night. Senior guard Jasmina Rosseel led Drexel with 18 points in what was ultimately her last game of her spectacular collegiate career and sophomore guard Hollie Mershon had 15 points and a team-high three assists.
Junior forward Tyler Hale had a great game off the bench, scoring 13 points to along with six rebounds and four steals. Junior Kamile Nacickaite scored 10 points and pulled down seven boards, but shot only 4-of-14 from the field for the game.
The Dragons played well in the first half as Rosseel and Meshon were both in double figures by halftime. Drexel started off the game with a 13-5 run and after the teams went back-and-forth throughout the half, the Dragons took a 37-34 into the locker room. The game was close throughout in the second half, but FGCU started to pull away with some three-pointers and key free throws down the stretch.
Drexel finishes the 2010-2011 season with a solid record of 19-13 and it was capped off with the programs's third straight post-season tournament appearance. There is plenty to look forward to next season with all Dragons coming back, except for Rosseel, and the addition of three newcomers along with the return of point guard Marisa Crane.
This has been a good season for this Drexel team considering star forward Gabriela Marginean graduated and all the injuries that occurred this season. Head coach Denise Dillon and her staff did a solid job in 2010-2011 and we only expect great seasons for Drexel women's basketball in the near future.
