Dressing In Delicates

Anthropologie, The Oaks.

Take one look at the styles on the runways this year, and you might think you’ve stumbled upon a Victoria’s Secret fashion show by accident.  Right alongside the season’s newest take on spring tops, dresses and shoes, is an overwhelming amount of…lingerie?  It may make you do a double take, but this style revelation is more than minty – it’s a fresh version of the eighties bustier and lace looks our teen idols Madonna and Cindi Lauper rocked so fierce, and it’s back with a vintage 2010 twist.  Underwear as outwear is a hot key trend of the upcoming season, and, as you might guess, it’s not as simple as just wearing your Valentine’s Day purchases to the grocery store; wearing lingerie out-‘n-about can easily say “I’d like to go all the way” if care is not exercised.  So study up before venturing out:

Express, Los Cerritos Center.

Lace it Up.  Lace is a perfect place to start, and it effortlessly speaks to this trend.  Look for a corset style dress with lace overlay on pale pink or even bright turquoise – the color to be seen in this year – or, try on a lace trimmed camisole, like this one from Express at Los Cerritos Center  with a cropped denim jacket or fitted cardigan.  Headed out for a night with the girls, or have a hot date?  A black lace miniskirt is an alluring option.

Nordstrom, Westside Pavilion.

Nights in White Satin.  If you’re bound and determined to look classy, whether because you’re in office mode or just personal preference, a touch of satin is a great way to approach a lingerie inspired look.  Try spicing up your work wardrobe with a touch of the soft stuff – tuck a satin bustier with structured boning in a neutral color (even a nude beige)  under your blazer for an unexpected, yet still appropriate, bit of trend.  Hitting a cocktail party?  Try a satin stunner with draping like this dress from Nordstrom at Westside Pavilion, a style that is flattering to all and very popular on the red carpet this year.

Forever 21, Lakewood Center.

Sheerly for Fun.  Another element that designers are having fun with for this trend is sheer fabrics.  This ranges from floor length ball gowns made from see through materials to a simple top with subtly sheer sleeves; here’s a great one from Forever 21 at Lakewood Center.  Pick a cream transparent top with a bandeau style under layer to partner with your denim, or a flirty button up dress made from sheer black fabric with a black lace trimmed slip.  Just be sure, if going sheer, that you exercise some caution and take a second look at what you’re revealing before you head out the door.

Anthropologie, The Oaks.

Cuckoo for Corsets.  It’s not by accident that many wedding gowns have a corset top - on the day you want to look your most beautiful, it makes sense to wear the most flattering top you can come by.  These old fashioned contraptions, suck you in at all the right places (and keep you there) and redistribute your ampleness to other great locations – you can’t go wrong.  Look for one that doesn’t cause you to overflow on top and make it your “go-to” party look for spring.  Here’s a denim version from Anthropologie at The Oaks.
