Dreamfall Chapters reaches Kickstarter goal and beyond

Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey, the long-awaited continuation of The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey reached over $900,000 pledged on on Kickstarter Monday, Feb 18, surpassing their goal budget of $850,000.

Dreamfall Chapters is being produced by Red Thread Games, a Norwegian company with ambitions to finish the adventure game saga started by Funcom. Founded by Ragnar Tørnquist, the creator of The Longest Journey saga, Red Thread Games recently acquired the rights to the franchise, and went to Kickstarter with the project.

The Kickstarter launched Feb 8, 2013. After a week, the team released "stretch goals," additional features to be added if the game should surpass its funding goal. The first stretch goal, at $900,000, which would make the game available on Mac and Linux as well as Windows operating systems, has already been reached. Additional stretch goals announced included an in-game library full of game lore, and "A Longer Journey" at $1,000,000, which would introduce new locations, characters, and stores. The Kickstarter ends Mar 10.

Red Thread Games has brought together the core team members of the original two games, with writer and designer Ragnar Tørnquist, co-writer Dag Scheve, and art director Christer Sveen. The Kickstarter has begun video updates, and are now accepting pledges via Paypal at their Kickstarter main page. Some of the incentives for funding include early access to the game at $75, a limited edition boxed edition of the finished game at $500, and the very prestigious $10,000 pledge, promising an opening credit thank you, a thank you call from the development team, a goodie bag stuffed with signed scripts and concept art, a trip to the launch party, and of course, ten copies of the final game.

The Longest Journey is a point-and-click adventure game released in 1999 for the PC. It gained a large following from adventure game fans, as well as receiving numerous awards and overall critical success. Its sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, released on PC and Xbox, also collected large praise from gamers and critics. They are both available now on Steam.
