Dream debut for America’s Mohamed

Mohamed debuted with a victory for America.

Club America’s coach Antonio Mohamed had the debut of his dreams when his team thrashed Tigres UANL 3-0 at the Azteca Stadium to begin their Clausura 2014 adventure in La Liga MX. It didn’t take long for the eagles to break through the Monterrey-based club’s defense.

“Tigres never took a shot on goal,” Mohamed said after the game. “We could have scored five or six goals. The referees make mistakes in all games, in favor or against, this happens all over the world. The team played well and left no doubts on the pitch.”

Colombian Luis Gabriel Rey scored for America in the 10th minute. He shot from outside the area. However, it was defender Carlos Salcido who attempted to clear the ball but changed its trajectory sending it into the net for the 1-0. It was only a slight change since the ball was on track and it was awarded to Rey instead of an own goal.

The linesman missed an offside call in the 31st minute. Paul Aguilar was inches offside when he received a ball and sent it past goalkeeper Enrique Palos to double the America lead to 2-0. It was calls like these that prompted Tigres coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti to state that “America plays with 12 players.”

The final goal of the game came minutes into the second half. Mexican national team hero Raul Jimenez received the ball and fired on first touch. Palos blocked the shot but did not take control of the ball. Jimenez recovered the rebound and fired once more to beat a downed goalkeeper for the 3-0.

The game did not go without controversy as the referee failed to award two clear penalties in Tigres’ favor. As mentioned above, he allowed Aguilar’s offside goal, and kept what most would call favorable rulings for the home side.

America takes over the league table due to goal differential. The eagles will travel to Latin America’s most northern city to take on Club Tijuana. Mohamed will take on the team he led to the Apertura 2012 championship. Tigres will return home to host CF Pachuca.

Saturday's results:

CF Monterrey 0, Cruz Azul 0

CF Pachuca 0, Toluca FC 1

Atlas 0, Club Tijuana 0

Chiapas FC 1, Veracruz 1
