Dramatic police chase after stabbing ends in police-involved shooting

Takoma Park, MD. --- It was a dramatic chase that ended in a massive crash and shooting of the suspect after a stabbing was reported at the Sunoco gas station at 6907 New Hampshire Avenue.

Takoma Park police received a report of an assault in progress at 3:47 p.m. Saturday.

Police Chief Ronald Ricucci said a Takoma Park resident had been pumping gas into his Porsche.  He went into the Sunoco convenience store.  When he returned, he found the suspect sitting in his Porsche.

The men got into an altercation.  The owner of the Porsche was stabbed four times.  Vehicles were involved in a fender-bender after the suspect fled in a red Ford Focus.  Police would not say if it had been stolen.

Arriving officers found the victim with serious chest wounds.  About two minutes later, the department’s canine officer reported that citizens told him a red car, the Ford Focus, had just been used in the crime.  It was last seen headed north on New Hampshire Avenue.

For about 10 minutes, Takoma Park police chased the red Ford Focus, at times losing the vehicle, but finding it quickly again.

After running through several Prince George's County neighborhoods in Langley Park, the chase turned onto Riggs Road where it ended just past Metzerott Road in Adelphi at 4 p.m.

"Oh, he flipped," a female officer reported over the radio, "It's a mess!" Moments later, that transmission was followed by "Shots fired!  Shots fired!  Subject down."

Chief Ricucci says the female officer attempted to Tase the suspect, but without success.  She struggled with the man until the male police officer shot him after ordering him to stop.

Witnesses said the suspect was shot several times and was in cardiac arrest.  He was taken to a trauma center and was pronounced dead.  Police would only identify him as a 19-year-old male.

Police later identified the suspect as Keston David Lewis, 19, of the 700 block of Linden Oak Place in Odenton, Md.
