In the first round of the post-season WNIT, the Drexel Dragons (23-10) defeated the Iona Gaels, 59-50, on Thursday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Seniors Hollie Mershon and Taylor Wootton led the way with 15 and 13 points, respectively, and junior guard Fiona Flanagan chipped in with 11.
Drexel started slow and Iona was off and running, playing their typical fast break game. But the Dragons slowed things down after the first few minutes and started to find their shooting groove towards the end of the first half. Mershon scored seven points in a row to end the first half and gave Drexel a 23-18 lead at the break.
The Dragons came out firing in the second half, going on a 9-2 run that included back-to-back three-pointers from Flanagan. Drexel never looked back and secured the win with free throws and a three-pointer from freshman guard Meghan Creighton.
Drexel now moves on to the second round and will take on the Harvard Crimson on Saturday night back at the DAC.
